Character Zbrush Sketch

Did a character head sketch in zbrush after work. I haven't sculpted in a while, so it was really fun to give it a try again.

Paintings this week

I helped out with a church charity auction and did a couple of pieces for the event. I donated all of them with exception to the apples and milk jug painting. Two came with home made frames as well- they made a couple of bucks for some families that could use some help during the Christmas season.

This weeks painting session: cloth. The studio at work has a nicer lighting set up than my apartment. At home, all I have are tungsten lights, and everything looks really washed toward a warm weird color like the last two paintings.

Orange and Cloth

Practice Study from last week. Yikes!

Sunday, November 6, 2011

I found some pears at work that nobody ate during the week and brought them home to do another practice painting. Wanted to give cloth a try.

Weekly Painting

This weeks painting was based around doing dark subjects.

Extra stuff

Here are some extra things that I hadn't posted. The top one is a small painting I did on a piece of scrap board a while back that I never posted because I didn't like the apple. The middle is a sketch from this week in response to some crazy blues and greens that have been showing up in the morning skies here. The bottom one is a drawing on an board that goes along with a story idea a friend and I had discussed.

Quick painting of a pomegranite that I bought last week. I tried painting softer than usual on the subject- The bad quality of the picture actually helps with this one! The real painting has less blue in it and is a little more muted.

I started a new sketchbook in September and have made my way through a third of it, or so. The pages are thicker so I'm using ink, acrylic, gouache, watercolors, pencils- whatever I feel like packing in my bag. It's been pretty fun, but kinda sloppy too. I have a ton to work on, but I'm happy with how enjoyable it has been lately.

We did white on white again this week- I learned a lot from last weeks approach and feel like there was some improvement!

This week's painting session: white objects.

The egg painting was this week's painting session. It's small, probably 4"x4", due to I could only paint for a little bit today. So I decided to paint the entire painting in a tiny space with a big brush- I didn't really think that one through. I painted the other two after work with stuff I found in the art studio and the kitchen.

Just did a quick painting of three pairs. I take pictures of these paintings with my phone and sometimes the colors, contrast, and quality are pretty inaccurate. Anyway, this one took about 30-40 minutes. I was trying to move away from my habit of noodling things too much.

Another egg painting for fun. This one was way more of a struggle- I don't think I approached it well. I wish I could just use simple strokes, but I messed up the painting early and continued polishing a turd until I kinda realized what I had done.

This week's painting. This was a super fun/challenging subject- we will do another egg next week!

I went to do a landscape sketch this morning- it was hard. I learned how much I struggle with simplifying shapes and colors- it was a good excerise.

Here's a quick still life I did at home- just for kicks.
This weeks painting- we used natural window light. We painted for 1.5 hrs like all the other paintings. The subject is a giant bulb, two plums, a lemon, a cup and a kettle. The lighting was difficult on this one, but a lot of fun.

This week's painting. 1.5 hrs- it's a welded statue of a robot. I was struggling with the subject and received some great help- you can easily spot which strokes aren't mine! I learned some great lessons about value and laying down the brush!

This week's painting session. oil on board- 1 - 1.5 hours of actual painting. It's a bunch of baseball equipment if you can't tell what the content is. The baseballs are those triangular things- which is how they are shaped in real life.
